As part of our commitment to public safety, the Bald Knob Tornado Shelter is available to residents during severe weather events, particularly tornado warnings and severe storms. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe and access the shelter efficiently.

Accessing the Shelter

  • Location: The tornado shelter is located at Bald Knob Elementary. This shelter is NOT open during regular school hours (7:00 AM - 4:00 PM).

When will the doors open?

  • Automated System: The doors to the shelter automatically unlock when a tornado warning is issued within the city limits of Bald Knob. The shelter will remain open as long as conditions require.

  • Public Access: During active tornado warnings, the shelter will be accessible to the public regardless of the warning's specific location within the city limits.

Shelter Protocol

  • Not the responsibility of officers or school staff to unlock doors. The system works automatically, if needed, emergency personnel will ensure the shelter is accessible. They may monitor the system and ensure safety, but they are not responsible for unlocking the doors during storms.

  • In Case of Emergency: If you are ever in doubt about whether the shelter is open during a warning, do not hesitate to go to the shelter. The system is designed to protect as many people as possible.

Safety During Severe Weather

  • Tornado Threat: When a tornado warning is issued, all residents should immediately seek shelter in a safe place. The Bald Knob Tornado Shelter offers a secure space to shelter until the danger has passed.

  • Flooding & Other Storms: Keep in mind that the shelter is designed primarily for tornado safety. In cases of severe flooding or other types of storms, check local conditions and stay informed.
