In response to rising operational costs, the Bald Knob City Council has enacted an emergency ordinance to raise the residential garbage pick-up rate. Passed on August 5, 2024, the ordinance aims to ensure the continued provision of essential sanitation services while safeguarding public health and welfare.
Immediate Rate Increase and Future Adjustments
Effective immediately, the standard fee for residential garbage services in Bald Knob will be increased to $15.44. This adjustment reflects the escalating costs associated with waste management, including transportation, disposal, and labor.
To keep pace with ongoing cost increases, the ordinance also introduces an annual rate adjustment. Starting in January 2025, the garbage pick-up rate will increase by three percent (3%) each year. This annual adjustment will continue unless amended or repealed by a future ordinance.
Protecting Public Health and Welfare
The City Council emphasized that these changes are necessary to maintain the high standards of sanitation that Bald Knob residents expect. Mayor Gary Looney commented, “Raising the garbage pick-up rate is essential to ensure that our city can continue to provide reliable and effective waste management services. This is about protecting the health, safety, and welfare of our community.”
Legal Provisions and Emergency Declaration
The ordinance includes provisions to repeal any conflicting ordinances and declares its sections severable, meaning that if any part of the ordinance is found to be invalid, the rest will remain in effect.
The emergency declaration accompanying the ordinance allows for its immediate implementation, reflecting the urgency of addressing the financial challenges facing the city’s garbage services.
Looking Ahead
The City of Bald Knob remains committed to providing high-quality services to its residents. The City Council encourages residents to stay informed about these changes and to participate in future discussions regarding the city’s waste management and other public services.
